Heres a musing on psychopathy: As I wrote in the article below, what H. sapiens has done over the last couple of centuries is to spawn an entirely new form of cybernetic super-organism. This organism that we call global techno-industrial civilization is now evolving on its own. We poor saps apparently kicked off the process in order to become autonomous, especially from our environment. In the course of events, rather than becoming autonomous in any sense, humans have been incorporated - through a process reminiscent of endosymbiosis - into this planetary super-organism as control elements. Now heres the muse of the day: Just as any cybernetic system may use feedback mechanisms to shape its components for optimal functioning, cybernetic civilization shapes its top-level control elements (politicians, corporate leaders etc.) for optimal function within the system. Because the system has very different needs from human beings, these control elements ens up being very different from garden variety human beings. In fact, they end up looking like psychopaths to those of us who see them from lower in the control hierarchy.Theyre not pathological at all from the point of view of the super-organism. However, it requires a serious shift in worldview to understand that there are two points of view involved - ours and the systems - and that one of them isnt even remotely human any more.
