Heres a post from outside Siggyspace...´ ________________________________________ skeptic is offline Time Lord skeptics Avatar -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Join Date:Nov 2008Location:New ZealandPosts:5,047 January 8th, 2015, 02:20 PM Sealeaf On a voyage between stars, there will be no asteroids, or anything else to exploit. Even Oort Cloud objects are so few and far between as to make them pointless targets. Interstellar travel will be a case of loading up with supplies, and travelling, living off those supplies, plus recycling, till arrival. Eventually they would notice that they were closer to some other star than they were to the Sun. I can imagin that there might be little interest in colonization even if a perfectly earthlike planet were found. The people on the space colony would be interested in perfecting the life they had, not in being pioneers. From their perspective there might be little advantage to living at the bottom of a gravity well. sigurdV is online now Forum Masters Degree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Join Date:Jun 2012Posts:717 January 19th, 2015, 06:59 PM First time I saw understanding of the change in lifestyle that awaits humanity: Ray technology will be a real bonus to spacelings. There are energy rays... simply concentrated solar energy! And matter rays ... you vaporise matter and accelerate ions. Space habitats, or space nations as I prefer calling them has no real need to travel at any particular speed ... what they need is access to matter and energy rays. To economise we send the energy ray towards the nearest sun accompanied by a matter ray ... why let the ionised matter escape when we can let it stay in the target system? First to get there is automated systems able to construct automated systems out of the matter in the matter ray... (the techniques are previously well tested within our own solar system) Basically solar paraboles are produced to collect and direct an energy ray intended to vaporise debris matter in the system: this collected matter ray being kept circling planets within the system ... The spacelings are arriving at a prepared system for them ... Now they are aiming for another close star... What if they notice a strong energy ray shining towards their captured Solar System?
