Heres a question from Josie and my response... Hi there, Now I know this isnt exactly a business tip as such but it is to do with being a successful PT. I wonder if you can help. I am currently training for my level 3 and feel totally bombarded by the amount of anatomy knowledge, whilst also feeling like I may now know how the body works in depth I feel like the importance of actual exercise types/amounts/variations isnt prevalent enough! To me, I want to make people fitter and achieve their goals whatever they may be but currently I think once qualified id be so tied up in logistics that Ive lost sight of what Im actually trying to achieve!! I hope this makes sense. Basically I want to know if there are any basic tips that apply to sessions I should focus on or make sure I include. Please help! One very confused trainee! Hi Josie. Firstly dont worry. You are doing the right things. An understanding of how the body works is vital to be a great trainer. Anyone can write a program that makes people work hard but understanding the body is vital in my opinion. In terms of key principles of program design yes there are - tempo, how to periodise programs and exercise selection and order are hugely important as are training phases and making sure your clients are prepared to squat, deadliest, push and pull etc. There will be some good program design articles on the poliquin website and on phil learneys blog. I know you want to be great straight away but the key really is to split your learning between exercise and a&p, nutrition - try ben coombers blog for starters and business/communication - theres lots on our page that will help with this. I would also suggest you read the free report from this page. Theres a lot to do and a lot to learn but remember 1. This career allows your to help change peoples lives so is well worth all the effort 2. The key once you start as a PT is firstly to be a great communicator - get to know everyone, build relationships, be freindly and show any clients that you really care. If you are good at these things everything else will come in time. 3. There are some good companies and mentors out there that can really help to support you in your career Stick at it and good luck
