Heres a summary of another interesting piece of research on eating behaviour. Thanks to Simon for telling me about it. Its about popcorn eating habits whilst watching films at the cinema. The two main things to come out of it are: 1) People who usually have popcorn when they go to the cinema were found to eat just as much whether they were given fresh or stale popcorn. What this suggests is that they werent eating it because of the taste, but more because it was a habit, something they always did. Their brains associated the cinema with popcorn (my brain associates the cinema with pic n mix)! 2) People who were asked to eat popcorn with their non-preferred hand ate less than if they ate with their dominant hand. What does this mean? Simply it means that to change our eating habits we have to change our eating behaviours. Do something different; change the environment, change what you do beforehand, choose a smaller container, eat with your other hand, share some (unless youre like Joey from Friends); the change you make probably doesnt matter as long as its useful for you. Little bits done often enough become habits. THINK, eat, live, move. :-)
