Heres a typical evening around our house of late. Hubby and I sit in the library, each with a laptop, checking out the houses for sale in the areas where we want to move. I look for ones I like and he, the environmental major, plugs it onto various maps and checks reports and feeds me more info. Me: A log cabin. Its perfect. I love it. Him: Thats practically in Bonny Doon. Way too far to commute. Me: Oh, this is it. Look, the house, the yard, its all so perfect. Him: Oh yeah, its perfect if you want to reach out your front window and touch the cars going by on Highway 17. Me: This one has a huge yard. Its so green. And that looks like a creek. Him: Its so green because theres a lake, a real lake, running right through yard. Me: But think of the wildlife. Him: Think of the flood zone. Me: This one has an even bigger yard. And a dog run. And ... Him: And its sitting right in the middle of the fault line. Me: This one is a double lot. Maybe bigger. Wait, its 2 acres. TWO ACRES. Him: Look at all those trees. Theres way too much shade for solar. Me: I love this one! Some mature trees but not much of anything else. Room for the compost heap and rainwater harvesting and a big garden. Him: Most of those trees are very old redwoods right next to house. Too close. Way too close. Bad in a storm. Bad in an earthquake. Bad storm plus earthquake. Not a good idea. Me: What about this one? Look at the lovely patio. I can just imagine sitting outside with my camera, watching the birds, taking pictures and ... Him: What you cant see is that house is smack dab against a hill. Can you say mudslide? Eventually we get around to looking at the inside of the house but that is less important to us this time around. We havent found the perfect place yet but weve had a lot of laughs while were looking. I know well find the right one when the time is right.
