Heres an active Mormon that has a refreshing attitude. I applaud his candor and his willingness to approach Mormon controversy with critical thinking. But, I think hes being overly generous in expecting the LDS church to adopt his suggestions. Simply put: organized religion -- of any flavor -- is not one that encourages its followers to ask open, honest questions. Not only is the believer discouraged from questioning the claims of their religion but any rational inquiry is expected to tip-toe away once religion enters the room. Its considered dangerous to question from within (which is true) and its considered rude to question from without (which is untrue). We are allowed to question people about their politics or ethics and expect them to be able to defend their beliefs -- or at least to be able to provide some reasonable evidence to support their claims..... ...yet somehow, on the massive subject of God and what he wants, all rational discussion must stop the moment someone says, Well, thats just what I believe. So, I applaud this young Mormon for his idealistic expectation that the LDS Church will ever encourage their young people to engage in this kind of scrutiny. Its what SHOULD be happening. But Im not holding my breath.
