Heres an example of a task 2 writing question. I completed this through working with a student of mine in Hanoi. This is likely to get a high bandscore such as an 8.0 or a 9.0. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Keeping up with the news is a common activity for most people, regardless of the country they are from. However, it is also easy to assert that a majority of the news stories that are covered are either irrelevant to a majority of people or are so meaningless that they barely warrant consideration. Personally, I feel that though the news can be important in some instances, on the whole it is simply entertainment and therefore could be argued to be a waste of time. There are some reasons why reading the news might be considered important. Some jobs and roles in society do require a good knowledge of what is happening in the world and there are some issues that should be shared with the wider society. One example of the former is for politicians and certain business roles, these positions require a greater depth of understanding of issues around the world such as war, economic crisis or economic success and new ideas due to the person’s ability to affect change in their own organisation or society. A good example might be the current Ebola crisis or the recent economic crisis. Further to this is the Ebola crisis for the mass public where an awareness of the symptoms, how to react to them and how to protect oneself from it is essential. However, it is true to say that most news stories have no direct or even indirect effect on life. Take celebrity gossip as a fine example. What a Hollywood actor or singer is doing at a party, or who they are dating is of absolutely no relevance to anyone except the people involved. Even more so is for the high level political stories and economic news from around the world. That a politician in one country has declared a new law will have zero impact on a regular citizen from another unless that person happens to be planning to travel or has relatives there. Another point to consider is how ill-informed or inaccurate most news coverage is. Journalists generally skim over the surface of a story without really explaining in any detail what the implications of it might be. Therefore any conclusions that might be drawn by a reader or viewer are, for all intents and purposes, worthless. All in all, though it may be interesting, even entertaining, to keep abreast of the news it has virtually no significance for the daily life of maybe 99% of citizens in the world and simply serves to entertain and amuse.
