Heres an old memory...Im curious if anyone else remembers. I used to hear people back when I was a teenager in the seventies talking about when people would go down to Highway 64 in Asheboro and race their cars. I was told that people would come from High Point and many other areas...sometimes theyd bring cars in on trailers. I was also told that some people came in from out of state. You see, there was an area of 64 that was perfect for racing. It was a straight section that was way out in the county...away from most houses. I was told that whenever racing was going on, there would be people on lookout for the Deputies or the Highway Patrol. If they saw someone coming up the highway, theyd flash their lights to signal to the guys at the other end. Sometimes, the local law enforcement officers would even get in on the action and help out. I had a friend years ago (hes passed away now) who worked for the Randolph County Sheriffs Department. He told me how he used to use his radar in his squad car so that he could tell the racers how fast they were going. As a teenager, all of this intrigued me. A friend of mine rode with me down to 64 and we actually saw where the highway was marked off with Start and Finish. How cool was that?! Anyway, its been a long time folks...anyone want to admit that they drove down to get in on the action?
