Heres my latest siren story: We live next door to a supermarket. Kids love going there especially on their own. Tzofia went down to buy some cereal by herself. Before she left, we asked her if she knew what to do if a siren sounds. She did. I tell her not to worry, if there is a siren, Ill run down and be with her. Theres not going to be a siren, he thought to himself ominously. 5 minutes later - siren. The second I hear the siren, I take off like a bat out of hell. No shoes, no kippah. Never ran that fast before in my life. Down 2 flights of stairs, out the front door, up the block. I sprint past one of the other shopkeepers and she is laughing at me thinking Im scared of the siren. I slam into the automatic doors of the supermarket because theyve been shut off. Yank the doors open and the manager yells at me to calm down. I shout back as Im running for the miklat that my daughter is in here alone. I race past the cornflakes and cake mixes and dash to the back staircase, petrified because I havent seen her. Rush down the stairs to see her calmly walking behind the other grownups. I yell down, TZOFIA! ABBAS HERE!. She glances up. Smiles. Keeps walking. In the miklat while clinging to Tzofia, Im subjected to the stares of the various clerks and shopladies. They laugh and point at my bare feet. I explain the story while catching my breath. One lady smiles, looks at her friend and says, Thats love. Yes. And thats Israel.
