Heres my year-end list of personal art and music highlights from 2014, in no special order: 1. Ethnographic Terminalia presents The Bureau of Memories: Archives & Ephemera at Hierarchy in Washington, DC: as one of the curators, I get to vote for this, right? 2. Tribute to Ornette Coleman, Prospect Park, Brooklyn: front-row seat for a historic gathering featuring the man himself along with Patti Smith, John Zorn, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed’s feedback guitars from Metal Machine Music… the list goes on and on 3. Tim Schwartz and Brigita Ozolins, Book Futures at the South Australian School of Art gallery, Adelaide (in cooperation with the Reanimation Library, Brooklyn): I contributed my remixed book “The Unknown Man” as part of the “Playing the Library” project 4. Allen and Allan: Hal Willner and Philip Glass performing the poetry of Allen Ginsberg in the intimate setting of The Stone, NYC, followed by an all-star cast performing songs and shtick of Allan Sherman: up close and personal in the land of the giants on a hot summer’s night 5. An evening with King Crimson, Best Buy Theater, NYC: sheer virtuosity unfiltered and unbound 6. Global Kids augmented reality project in the Hall of Northwest Coast Indians at the American Museum of Natural History, New York: a digital youth initiative in collaboration with the Haida Gwaii Museum at Kay Llnagaay, another great project I had the honor of working on this year 7. St. Vincent at Prospect Park, Brooklyn: tomorrow’s music, today 8. Ai Weiwei retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum: never sorry, never afraid 9. John Baldessari and Bill Viola, installation at the Smithsonian Institution American Art Museum, Washington, DC: a pair of time-based works perfectly timed and paired 10. Nam June Paik: Becoming Robot at the Asia Society Museum: origins of video art captured in the wild, restored and revived 11. Norton Juster and Jon Scieszka at Brooklyn Historical Society: an evening with the minds behind The Phantom Tollbooth and Cowboy & Octopus 12. Gowanus Music Club at Rockwood Music Hall: the kids rocked out, including the debut performance of Thea’s new band The Psychos 13. Banksy’s NYC residency: a grand game of hide & seek & search & destroy (technically last year, but a continuing topic of discussion) 14. Pawel Althamer: The Neighbors at The New Museum, NYC: kid-friendly participatory art democracy in action 15. All of the hundreds of projects, public art proposals, site visits, and blog entries created by all of the students in my Art of the Americas, Art of Creativity, and The Arts in Contemporary Society classes
