Heres our note for this Friday Focus: Consistency We hear a lot of complaints from athletes about how they don’t seem to be improving as quickly as they might or originally wanted. There are several reasons why this might be but when we examine their training programs one of the most common reasons we see for failure is consistency. We see a lot of athletes who swim three times one week, once the next, twice the week after. It should come as absolutely no surprise that by using that approach the gains aren’t anywhere near as big as hoped for and yet we still hear the complaints - almost as if the lack of improvement is a surprise to them. Whatever phase you happen to be in consistency is the key to improvement. The body – and to a degree the mind – adapts to overload situations by continually ‘learning’ physiological changes and improvements so muscles get stronger, fitter and generally better conditioned but this relies on a continual path of training and improvement. If one week you swim 3 good sessions then next just the one, the body loses the momentum it has gained, the adaptation or physical stresses placed on the body that allows for improvement ceases and so improvement stutters to a halt. Here at SubLX we always sit down and discuss goals and aims for the individual athlete but we stress from the outset and also throughout the program that consistency is the key. If you are not consistent with your training and effort then quite simply you will not get the results you are after. If you are being consistent and are still not seeing the gains or simply still view the swim as a necessary evil that you just have to ‘get through’ then there are clearly problems elsewhere and these are normally down to poorly planned or generic swimming programs. Our programs are realistic, achievable and specific to the individual. We at SubLX offer tailored swim programs that will see improvement if followed correctly.
