In preparation for my next pact magic project, Ive been doing a lot of research on the beliefs of goetia, the real-world practices that pact magic is based on. Goetia is an old method of magic that dates back hundreds of years, but it had something of a renaissance in the early 20th century at the hands of an author named Aleister Crowley. Crowley wrote a series of books that, together, form the fundemental beliefs for a religion called Thelema, which is based on the philosophy of the same name. Theres tons of interesting stuff in the religion, but the fundamental belief is as follows, Every man and woman is a star. Now, this doesnt mean star as in celebrity, but star as in every person exists independently from one another and has the freedom to grow and expand as they please. According to Crowleys texts, this is epitomized by something called a True Will which everyone has. In a nutshell, a True Will is a persons unique calling in life and another fundamental belief of Thelema is that you should always pursue your own True Will and never interfere with the True Will of another. Where does this idea sound vaguely familiar in a modern context? I started watching My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic a few weeks ago because I dont like to judge any media until Ive seen it for myself. One of the aspects that intrigued me is the concept of a Cutie Mark, which is basically this magical picture that a pony gets on her flank after she realizes what her calling in life is. A cutie mark, and I quote, represents that special something that everypony is uniquely good at. Sounds more than a little bit like True Will, eh? Maybe we ought to call the series, My Little Pony: Friendship is Pact Magic instead. Especially if one interprets cutie marks as the physical sign of some terrible, otherworldly spirit of friendship.
