Heres some more images from War of the Worlds: Goliaths main titles and a copy of the full concept script that I wrote for them. You can see how S.C. adapted it into their lovely and powerful images. This also had my original Kinetoscope concept. In the end I think that our post houses (Basecamp) transitions were a stronger way to go. Main Title Script By Joe Pearson 3/4/2012 NOTE: These images would essential be sepia tinted still illustrations that would be scanned and treated to look like turn of the century flickering Kinetoscope. Each image will “spin” flicker and then hold for a beat on the screen and the movie credit will be superimposed. Then the next image will spin/flicker into a hold with the next credit, etc. etc. Background music should be a real song from the 1900 period. Something from the public domain. Something ironically cheery and upbeat. English Dance would be good. AS SC will provide the art, producing the Main Titles this way will essentially cost Tripod nothing save the Post treatment of the individual images. PAGE 1 Leed’s Main Street—1900. It’s Sunday on a clear spring day and the townsmen are in a festive mood. Carriages, trolleys, and pedestrians dressed in their Sunday “best” fill the cobble stone street. Families with women in wide dresses holding parasols above their heads, men in dark suits with hats, running children rolling “hoops”, chasing dogs and each other, holding balloons. It should feel like a carnival/fun fair. Vendors on the sidewalk sell produce and items from wagons and temporary stalls. PAGE 2 The Surface of Mars. A long featureless plain with a canal running from the extreme foreground to a distant Martian city/hive. The Canal is almost completely dray, cracked and weathered mud with just a trickle of water in the center. The city/hive is a mass of towering organic shapes rising and twisting into the dark startlit sky. Bridges and tubes connect through many of the structures. Two moons hang above the bleak landscape. PAGE 3 Closer on the main street of Leeds. 8 year old Eric Wells and his mother and father are walking together down the crowded, festive sidewalk. They are all eating ice cream cones. PAGE 4 Martian Street—a wide metallic avenue that runs through the mid-level of the Hive. Tripods of all shapes and sizes move through the alien and organic metallic avenue. Martians are clearly steering and controlling these. Some Martians are moving along on their own, gracefully walking on the tips of their tentacles in the low gravity. Aircraft move through the sky above and below the metal road. PAGE 5 Leed’s Town Square Eric and his father are standing in the foreground watching the construction of a tall 8-story clock tower in the Square. Construction workmen and scaffolding and cranes surround the half finished structure. PAGE 6 Martian Launch Center Martians and their machinery (tripods, handling machines, etc.) are building a gigantic “space cannon”. The thing is huge, a thousand feed high. Scaffelding and construction equipment cover it. Behind it, we can see a row of completed cannon, extending into the distance. PAGE 7 Leed’s Main Street Eric and his family are on the crowded sidewalk watching a military parade moving down the avenue. A Stern officer on a magnificent horse leads a line of marching troops. (no helmets, just caps) towards us. Flags are flying from every gas lamp and many storefronts. People cheer, smile, point and wave. The air is full of confetti. PAGE 8 Martian City Street A 900 foot long Martian Cylinder is being transported along the massive avenue. In the foreground we see rows of “1900” model Tripods march towards us. In the sky above, dozens of Martian Fighter Wings move in formation. PAGE 9 Eric and his family wait in line at the Leed’s Victorian era train station as people board the steam train in front of them. PAGE 10 Martian Launch Center Large gantries loom over the completed space cannons. A Cylinder is being lowered down into the mouth of the foreground Cannon. PAGE 11 On the train’s smoke stack shooting up a huge burst of steam as the train prepares to leave the station. PAGE 12 The Martian Cannon fires, sending a huge gout of smoke and flame into the sky. PAGE 13 The train is racing through the English countryside. PAGE 14 Above the curve of Mars, a Cylinder hurtles up out of the thin atmosphere towards the viewer. A row of other Cylinders can be seen rising up in ascending order. On the surface below, a row of tall gas clouds (like thin mushroom clouds) can be seen from the series of titanic cannon explosions. PAGE 15 Eric and his family are approaching their home in their horse drawn carriage/wagon. Eric is sleepily cradled in his mother’s arms. PAGE 16 The fleet of Cylinders hurtle through space. We can see that there’s hundreds of them. PAGE 17 Eric and family sit around the dinner table. Their heads are bowed and they are saying grace. PAGE 18 Earth is a huge globe in space. Cylinder’s hurtle past us in rows, heading towards Earth. PAGE 19 Night outside of Eric’s home. A two story Victorian house Eric and his family are standing on the front lawn of their home in their pajamas and robes. They are excitedly looking up at the sky. We can see three “falling stars” streaking across the sky. Eric is pointing up at the closest “falling star”. PAGE 20 Low angle on Leed’s main street. In the foreground a child’s wooden toy train, lies broken on its side. A singed skull and bones lie nearby. Smoke rises from them. Behind them we can see the partially destroyed and burning street of the town. Multiple fires burn from buildings in the background. CREDIT — WAR OF THE WORLDS: GOLIATH After the Credits fade out, the still, sepia image of the background dissolves into a fully animated color scene. Smoke and fire animates. Sound comes on and we hear the burning of the fire and the distant sound of Martian Heat Rays firing and impacting. The music abruptly shifts from the “happy” 1900 song to the movie’s funereal “Leed’s Score”.
