Heres something to ponder: Why, when as a nation we trumpet our abhorrence of slavery do we allow a subtle form of slavery to exist within our own immigrant communities. I saw a woman today walking along a sidewalk wearing a burqah: this woman is a virtual slave of her husband and in her country of origin was probably purchased by the husband from her father. When this couple arrived on our shores, why did we not, as a society, demand that she be released from her husbands bondage? Is slavery condoned for immigrants but abhorred for our own citizens? The use of head coverings, although claimed to be a religious symbol, is almost always a symbol that some man holds the woman in virtual slavery. (And dont firebomb my house in the name of Allah: I have an attack Chihuahua on guard at all times.)
