Heres the latest from the WTSA Newsroom: * A 90-foot tower has been approved in Vernon to expand a wireless-broadband network. VTel received permission for the project this week from the Vermont Public Service Board. The tower was not met with significant opposition when it was discussed at a public meeting last fall. VTel is building facilities statewide that will send out a wireless, high-speed Internet signal as an alternative to traditional, cable-based Internet providers. Online state records show that the board has approved new VTel equipment at 17 Vermont sites since January. * The Public Service board has granted approval for a 105-foot cell tower on Shag Bark Hill off of Old Route 5 in Putney, despite objections from a number of area residents and the town’s planning commission. The Putney Selectboard chose to neither support nor oppose the tower. The certificate of public good issued by the PSB Wednesday allows AT&T to move ahead with its plan for the tower. * A tourism survey of visitors to Vermont says many were influenced by friends and family in their decision to travel to the state. The Vermont Tourism Research Center says visitors also indicated a strong preference for local foods and beverages. Tourism officials say the survey results will help them advertise the state more effectively. The state spends about $2 million annually on tourism marketing. * Vermont State Police say a car traveling on Interstate 89 northbound struck and killed a construction worker removing fog line markers on the highway in South Burlington. The accident happened at about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday. Police say 61-year-old Robert Stanhope of Richford was struck. An emergency medical service worker who was traveling north stopped to render aid. Stanhope died at the scene. Police said the driver of the car was 22-year-old Emma Gentry of South Burlington. They are still investigating the accident. * The chief executives of the Market Basket supermarkets say employees who have stayed off the job to demand the return of fired CEO Arthur T. Demoulas must return to work by Monday. The statement Wednesday said the workers can return without penalty. It also says the company will begin seeking replacements for those who dont. Managers and assistant managers of 68 of the 71 New England stores signed petitions saying they would resign if Demoulas isnt restored with full authority. The Market Basket board, controlled by his cousin Arthur S. Demoulas, fired Demoulas in June. Employees loyal to Arthur T. have held protests and refused to make warehouse deliveries to stores. The board said Tuesday it continues to evaluate offers to buy the supermarket chain, including one from Arthur T. Demoulas, among other strategic alternatives. * The Windham County Democratic Committee is giving area residents another chance to meet the democratic candidates for State Senate vying for two spots on the November ballot. The meeting will begin at 6:30 this evening in the Lower Theater of the Bellows Falls Opera House. The forum will be moderated by Windham County Assistant Judge Lamont Barnett. Another forum will take place in Brattleboro on Thursday, August 21. The candidates running in the Democratic Primary are Roger Allbee, Becca Balint, Joan Bowman and incumbent Jeanette White. * Lottery Numbers: TS Pick 3: 2-4-1 TS Pick 4: 5-3-3-3 Mass: 7-0-5-5
