Heres the post from Justin Rinaldi, coach of Alex Rowe re Athletics Australia warning of loss of 1/3 of funding if he ran in Monaco. He ran and equaled the the 46-year old Australian record. Athletics Australia once again snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Justin Rinaldi: We (Alex Rowe and I) only found out late on Monday night (6am Tue AUS time) that he got in to the meet. We had it penciled in as a possibility, but you can never count on getting a start in a meet of that quality. AA were aware of this months ago, as to we aware of the rules around turning up at the camp on time. We emailed AA asking for permission to run the meet and were informed in the response email that he would lose 1/3 of his funding for breaking the rules! I completely understand the need to have rules in place, but also understand that each case needs to be looked at in isolation. Alex running there with the possibility of breaking the longest standing record on the book was an opportunity no one in their right mind would/could pass up. Its not about the money, its more about the message being put out there. I would hope that Alexs performance does more for OUR sport than turning up to a camp on time would ever do. I know the juniors in Eugene have been pumped by his resent results and I know this will help them aim to perform at a higher level moving forward. Alex has shown that no record is out of reach if you put your head down and do everything that is required. All that said, we are thankful for all the support both AA and the VIS provide Alex and hell continue to represent this country and this sport to the best of his abilities and play with in whatever rules AA imposes.
