Heres the thing about galleries, First of all, try doing this without one, . . . to back you up, to introduce you to new collectors, to be seen in general. And then, when you get past the part where people see your work in the venue, . . .theres the correspondence with the collectors(all of them), its a lot of work to put on a show, . . . in an ideal situation, you grow with your gallery, . . . Any good artist worth their salt is constantly working on their stuff or thinking about it like that song you cant get out of your head, . . .meanwhile, the gallery is handling other things like promotion; advertising, mailers, basically any press they can muster. Its a gamble for most galleries to give any new artist a chance and sometimes it doesnt work out. A good gallery has the capacity to create a fan base for you by just giving you the opportunity of a show. And yes, I know there are artists who have had shows on their own without a gallery in a pop-up space of sorts(and some have done pretty well), . . .but not before spending a great deal of time building their own fan base beforehand. It sounds cool to be independent but mark my words, if you dont have a significant fan base, . . . it will probably not work. Most of the artists that I know who complain about galleries just havent picked the right ones, or rather havent experienced working with one that is the right fit for what they are doing or what they are trying to say, . . .(that is a whole other conversation). Do your research. If you are new, you have to work your way up regardless of how exceptional you may be, . . . because usually there isnt an instant market for you. In the second stage of my career, a certain gallerist in Seattle, . . . Kirsten Anderson at Roq La Rue Gallery gave me a chance and I consider myself lucky that i still work with her today.
