Here’s the first of my 10 favorite movie endings (skipping over The Godfather, Citizen Kane, 2001, Casablanca, and Sunset Boulevard because everybody knows those already). Obligatory spoiler alert, but the most recent one on my list was released in the early 1970s. Besides, it’s my belief that a great ending is spoil-proof. 10. Requiem for a Heavyweight. Screenplay by Rod Serling, starring Anthony Quinn, Jackie Gleason, Mickey Rooney, Julie Harris, and, as themselves, Jack Dempsy and Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay). Washed-up mobbed-up boxer Anthony Quinn embraces the only opportunity he has left. (I’d imagine the 1956 Playhouse 90 version starring Jack Palance is also worth your time.) I felt sick the first time I saw it on TV in my teens. No spoiler, just the trailer: youtu.be/sPtudkGA14w
