Here’s the scene: 25+ years ago…at a bar called Joe’s East West. Before Jersey Shore’s Pauly D even knew what a ‘blowout’ was…there was Marc…an Italian college student, sporting a mean mullet, wearing a thick gold chain, Z Cavaricci pants, and crusin’ in his I-ROC Z…convertible. Over a 7up and Vodka, I asked him what music he likes as we hear Tone Loc getting his Funky Cold Medina on…blaring over the bar’s speakers. Marc tells me, “Old School country...like Hank Williams Senior.” Mind you, this was way before country was cool…Garth Brooks didn’t even hit the scene, and Tim McGraw was still in Florida in college. I laughed at Marc and dared him to prove it. We walked to his red I-ROC in the parking lot and he played the cassette tape. It was Hank Williams Sr classic song, “Im So Lonesome I Could Cry.” And yes, it was a cassette tape. While Bobby Brown was all up in arms about his prerogative, Marc was sure of his. Marc went on to explain that he’s from a family of farmers, hunters, and truck drivers…and proud to be country. It was right there and then that we shared our first kiss. Fast forward to now…2014 Marc, the distinguished Italian businessman, still wears the gold chain under his tailored suit, still likes his cars, and still is proud of his heritage…and country music. And on the weekends…he gets down with his country roots, Charlie Daniels…and the family dog. I think Ill go out and give him a kiss.
