Hero Dogs Molly Pitcher - Molly It was a beautiful day in Ohio. I was playing with my siblings when I heard some unfamiliar voices. My human mommy took me to meet these new people. They were very nice and they had me do some strange things like walking on a cookie sheet and a plastic bag and retrieving a wad of paper. They also did some weird things like showing me a noisy toy and dropping a coin box behind me. They said I was a nice puppy, and I left with them in an RV – that’s like a house on wheels. I heard them say we were going to Maryland and that one day I would grow up to be a wonderful Hero Dog. That all sounded very interesting to me although I really didn’t understand. In the RV, I met Hero Dogs Sammie and therapy dog Scotty. Scotty wagged his tail and sniffed me. Sammie wasn’t as friendly, but after a few minutes we were all fine. I did great on the trip. It took us a long time to get where we were going. But when we did get there, I got a reception like you wouldn’t believe! Everyone seemed so happy to meet me. They told me I was beautiful and they all wanted to hold me. I felt very important. A few days later, I went to my first class in Puppy Kindergarten. It was then that I met my puppy raiser. It was love at first sight. She took me home and didn’t even mind taking me out couple times during the night since I was still pretty little and couldn’t always “hold it!” She takes me on nice walks where there’s always something to see and smell. Oh, on one of these walks, I saw my first butterfly. I stopped in my tracks for a good look, and why is it I can’t go running after that squirrel? Many relatives and friends came by with their dogs just to say hello to me. Guess I must be pretty darn cute because everyone made a big fuss. A big yellow Lab named Sidda also visited. She really looks a lot like my real mother, and she lets me jump up on her and bite at her ears. I was told that she’s been through a lot of other puppies in her life, but I’m the very first Hero Dog. In puppy class, I have met lots of other puppies including Hero Dogs Robbie with whom I love to play. He is only one day older than I am. We have been learning to come when called, “sit,” and “down.” I’m pretty good at all that! A few days after I went home with my puppy raiser, I had to go back to Hero Dogs and stay for couple days; but I didn’t mind. Robbie was already there waiting for me and we played and played. We are good buddies. While I was at Hero Dogs Becca took me to see Dr. Marcie for a shot! Oh man, someone said there are a lot more of them; but when we got back to Hero Dogs I forgot all about it because I got to run around in the play yard with the big kennel dogs. My puppy raiser is so crazy about me, she can’t wait to tell everyone how brave and fearless I am, just like my Revolutionary War namesake, Molly Pitcher. (Sometimes she calls me MOLLY PISTOL!) Her grandson thinks I’m really cute, too. He spent the night with us, and I found out kids are really fun to play with. He never got tired of throwing the Kong ball. Being the good retriever that I am, I kept bringing it back so he could throw it again and again. And it gets better! What a lucky puppy I am because every Sunday morning I get to go to the Hero Dogs kennel and help with kennel duty and play with the big dogs that are in “college.” Some day that will be me, and I will be just like Gracie and Annie and Mae, but let’s not talk about that yet, not for a long time. I am so happy to be a Hero Dog in training. My new life is exciting and full of new experiences. I am ready to learn and look forward to the day when I will be partnered with my very own veteran.
