Hetonas Swachh Bharat & Clean Ganga campaign ======================================== The Himalayan Ecology & Treatment of Natural Agriculture Samiti (HETONA) a premier voluntary agency of the Garhwal Himalayas has started its village clean-up campaign to contribute in PM Modis Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on18.10.2014 from Mukhawa, a village near Gangotri shrine, located at the height of over 2400 meter from sea level. A village situated on steep hill terrain, with 367 households of over 1200 population is known as mayaka (parental house) of mother Ganga as her doli (chariot) take rest here during entire winter (Off pilgrimage) season. The village is chosen as it falls in the vicinity of origin of mother Ganga as well as its being the premier village of District Uttarkashi of Uttarakhand and all priests of Gangotri temple also hails from this village. So the message of cleaning the Ganga from its origin as well as making this village open defecation free, is loud and clear not only for the entire Ganga valley, but also for the entire nation, the Swachh Bharat and Clean Ganga Abhiyan. This clean up campaign was not just symbolic as is witnessed in recent past with call given by PM Modi to pick up broom and start sweeping anywhere as was reported by many news papers. Hetona made a lot of preparations to make it peoples programme by sensitizing the villagers especially womenfolk of the Gram Panchayat with concerted awareness campaign on health, hygiene and environmental sanitation that how defecation on open spread the fecal oral route transmission diseases and how excessive limit of fecal coliform in drinking water cause intestinal diseases like diarrhea, other water borne diseases and so on. The villagers gathered in good number and clean-up started from Ganga temple vicinity to a main village path up to Bhim Gadhera towards north-east and to Dharali-Harshil path towards south-west, which went up for 3 hours. Path cleaned and garbage were collected and disposed off safely After clean-up campaign a meeting of villagers held, which took up following important decisions to make the village clean forever: 1. a fixed day, 22 of every month was decided for village clean-up programme, in which all hamlets of the Gram Panchayat would cleaned up regularly. 2. Every household would construct a garbage pit in front of their houses and dispose off domestic garbage safely in it. 3. To make the village open defecation free 100% household sanitary latrines of 2 bio-leaching pits (design) would be constructed. The target is fixed to construct by May 2015. (So far there are only 90 household latrines and 277 more are needed to be constructed.) Let us endeavor to contribute in Swachh Bharat Abhiyan of PM Modi and realize the dream of the Father of Nation.
