Hetty Bower was born in 1905 when Edward VII was King, and women did not have the vote. She died this week. You will not have heard of this wonderful lady. A life long Socialist, she devoted here life to campaigning for social justice and peace. Hetty was a veteran of the 1926 General Strike, and of the 1936 Battle of Cable Street, when she faced down Oswald Mosleys fascist thugs, and was a founding member of CND. She went to secret meetings and saw the suffragettes win the vote for women. She joined the Labour party in 1923, and helped get the first Labour MPs into Parliament. She marched against austerity cuts, to preserve our NHS, and always for peace. Shqe once said I dont think human beings can be civilised whilst we waste to.e and money killing each other, we should be sitting at a table talking to each other. She attended the Labour party conference, where she told Ed Milliband two words Social Justice..She remembered when families were forced to choose between medicine for their children and bread, before the NHS. So in a time when David Beckham is being touted for a Knighthood, remember Hetty Bower a TRUE hero of our country..RIP Hetty...
