Hey Alpha Zeta Theta! Im from Psi Chapter! (University of California, Santa Barbara) and this is my sixth active quarter (about 4 semesters). I pledged Spring 2012 as a member the Alpha Class of my Chapters rechartering. When I came into college, i had no prior idea of what Alpha Phi Omega was, I looked to all fraternities in a negative light, and never saw myself rushing or pledging a Fraternity. This whole idea soon changed for me, as I was approached by my Founding Class President with a flyer for their rush. I told myself I was already too committed to other things to put in the time to rush, maybe in the fall, I said. That was before I had met the other Brothers in the Founding class. They were all so friendly, and made me so welcomed, there was something that drew me in. Next thing i knew, I was pledging and soon after that, an active member. I was not really as involved my first few months as an active, I was sort of just barely finishing my requirements, and coasting by. I did not really think much about APO at that time, it was just an organization that I volunteered with. I would say the event that completely changed my outlook in APO, was the 2012 National Convention in Anaheim where I had the opportunity to be my Chapters National Voting Delegate, and also serve on the National Organization Reference Committee. This opened my eye to a whole new world, it really made me realized that I was apart of something much much larger than myself. I would say this event helped me development and grow more as a person, because of this event, I think i become more and more confident in myself when it came to taking on leadership positions. From that point my involvement in APO increased 10 fold. I was nominated to serve as my chapters Sergeant At Arms, a position in which i was reluctant to take on at first, because I did not really have much leadership experience. After my term I was reelected to serve in that same position. During my time serving the Executive Committee, I have experienced the full spectrum of emotions. At one point during my most recent term, I told myself that all this time I have put in was really not worth it and that my time could be better spent doing something else. I have also felt the satisfaction from when your advisor tells you, youve done a good job. Despite all the negativity that I have gone through, I find myself always coming back to APO, so much that now I am the President of my Chapter. To sum it up, I really owe a lot of my personal leadership growth and development to APO. If it were not for the Brothers that believed in me, I probably would not be a president, or the person that I am today. APO has definitely helped me changed my outlook on the world. The most supportive group of people that I have ever encountered in my life are in APO. sorry if this long block of text is hard to read, its currently 3 am, and i wanted to do this while i was still awake so hope you enjoy part of my story. tl;dr: APO has changed me so much in the time I have been in it. The brothers that i have met have been so supported me and I owe a lot of my success to them. They truly have provided me environment to continue to grow and develop as a person.
