Hey Folly Beachers, here’s your City Council meeting - TopicsExpress

Hey Folly Beachers, here’s your City Council meeting update: At our September meeting, the open burning ordinance came back after some reworking with Councilmember Stuckey and Fire Chief Steve Mims. The language in this version is a lot better than its previous entry, making fire pits, grills, chimineas, etc legal if used in accordance. It passed first reading, so there are 2 more. Check it out and let your voice be heard… An ordinance change to be aware of: Accommodations Taxes and Hospitality Taxes structure has changed so that the majority and any overflow goes into the beach preservation fund in preparation for our next renourishment project. Translating into a LOT of tourism dollars paying for our beach renourishment… 71% of Local Option Sales Tax was returned for property tax relief. My recycling at special events ordinance was unanimously approved on 2nd reading, with a 3 word amendment. We discussed the City going paperless. Mary and Sandy are going to look into cost comparisons. Tourism Board vacancies: Something changed from when I picked up my agenda Friday to when the meeting was held on Tuesday. I asked for a postponement in light of new information received just prior to the meeting and was denied. I asked why classification of appointments had changed the day of the meeting but no proper answer was given. The vote was taken with little discussion, almost like it was planned. It is because of this I notified the municipal clerk the next morning of my intent to make a motion to rescind. This means at our next meeting we will have to discuss my motion to rescind my vote. A small political move, only valid within 24 hours of the vote, to try one more time to get proper answers. I doubt it will change the vote, but let’s be transparent about what we’re doing, people. Fair is fair… We accepted the formerly useable property at the end of the washout from the forfeited land commission of Charleston County. Good thing since we’ve had a beach walkover there for years… I introduced an ordinance that will require future driveways to be built with pervious material. It was unanimously approved and will now go to Planning for a public hearing. This is a crucial piece of our flooding problem. We have been working to clear drains and identify low spots to engineer drainage, but we have to increase infiltration as well. If this goes through, it will not be something that immediately helps, but over time it will help tremendously.
