Hey Friends ... today is the 70th Anniversary of D-Day ... the best we can say is THANK YOU to the armed forces who gave their lives on this historic day! Heres some history for you about this day ... The 70th Anniversary of D-Day The term D-Day has been used for many different operations over time. But for the last 70 years, it has generally referred to the Allied landings on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. D-Day was a turning point in World War II, a moment when the course of the war – and of world events - depended on the Allied troops participating in this action. The majority of troops who landed in Normandy were from the United Kingdom, Canada, and the U.S. but there were also troops from many other countries including Australia, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, Holland, New Zealand, Norway, and Poland. That day the Allies landed about 156,000 troops in Normandy: 73,000 were American and the British and Canadian had 83,115, of whom 61,715 were British. The landings were supported by 11,590 aircraft . Huge naval forces were involved and assigned to the 6,939 vessels were 195,700 personnel: Americans - 52,889, British - 112,824, and other Allied countries - 4,988. Millions more men and women, both in the armed forces and as civilians in the Allied countries, were involved in preparations for D-Day, Over 425,000 Allied and German troops were killed, wounded or went missing during the Battle of Normandy. That number included 209,000 Allied casualties: 83,045 were from the 21st Army Group of British, Canadian and Polish ground forces and 125,847 were from the American ground forces. Today, twenty-seven war cemeteries hold the remains of over 110,000 dead from both sides. Where a child is hungry, where men have no homes, Where the powerless are yearning to breathe free, Oh, may we fight for justice till theres justice for all and become what God made us to be! - Gloria and Bill Gaither
