This is an interesting turn of events and I’m looking forward to seeing what comes of it. Here are my thoughts on the matter and what I’d like to see. I think most people are familiar with this saying: “The definition of insanity is to continue doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results.” Yet right now, people are dragging themselves out of bed and going on a run, with the sole intention of losing body fat. In addition, they’ll try eating a little less (standard advice to lose weight) to speed up the process. They’ll do this until things are back in check, or (more likely) they’ll just get tired of it all and concede their fate. Lets not get this twisted – I’m not writing this to hate on running - I just disagree with the idea that body fat is the big problem. It isnt. I see way too many people who’re already lean that are convinced that they need to lose MORE weight, and this is just plain wrong. The key to fat loss is to build muscle! Youth Body Image We are all soooooo concerned about gaining weight – it’s practically insane at this point, given that we know WEIGHT isn’t the problem. It’s a lack of muscle mass, an overabundance of body fat, and the constant focus on purging that sets us up to be unhealthy. What’s really insidious is that this mindset has been adopted by CHILDREN who have no business worrying about it. Kids need to GROW! There is literally no other period of time that shapes your health more than your teens/early twenties. You’ve been provided with all of the tools that you need to increase your lifespan, IF you take advantage of them. Losing weight is not always the best tool to pull out. Put simply, if your body wants to grow, there is probably a very good reason. It doesn’t come down to “too many Twinkies” or “not enough running.” Very likely, your body wants you to grow so you can live a long, healthy life. When parents find out about Eat To Perform, they assume we’re a dieting site. When I tell them we are the opposite of a diet site, they seem puzzled. Undeterred, sometimes they will start asking me questions. My little Janey is starting to get concerned about her weight. WHAT SHOULD SHE DO?” The key word, in my view, is “DO.” So What SHOULD Little Janey Do? It’s really pretty easy – she should love herself and focus on becoming stronger and more capable! I live near a high school and I see packs of shirtless boys/girls in sports bras running around all the time. After all, running is cheap and anyone can do it (full disclosure: my daughter is on the Cross Country team). The kids where I live are pretty lean - skinny in fact. Most are pretty active and they arent growing yet. I imagine that there are some other kids in a weight room somewhere, but based upon the sheer number of skinny kids I see, its not really possible…and thats whats wrong. Again, I have to make it clear that this isnt an anti-running post; I run, my family runs. I believe that running is part of keeping yourself fit, and that getting good at it makes you a more capable human being. Nothing is wrong with that, but when the ONLY form of exercise you engage in is running, you’re really missing out. Muscle is the missing ingredient to a more healthful life, and running doesn’t really build any muscle. Resistance training/weight training needs to be a much bigger part of the overall equation, and we need to drop the obsession with LOSING all the time. It needs to start in the early stages of human development. We Tried The Other Way – Now Let’s Try The RIGHT Way! Our society’s view of exercise is dominated by an overly-cardio focus where oftentimes, the answer to health is eating less. How did this happen? Virtually everyone I know lifts weights and we love it! Here are some FACTS that are widely known but ignored: •Building muscle makes you more capable – everything from opening doors to walking up a flight of stairs, opening your mail to carrying in the groceries is easier and more rewarding with more muscle and a greater development of strength! •Joint and bone health benefits greatly from weight training because when you build stronger muscle, it has a residual effect on the things that make those muscles move – bone density and tendon/ligament strength improve! •Resistance training improves nutrient partitioning, so instead of storing fat, your body will often build stronger, denser muscle. As I mentioned earlier, more muscle is favorable for fat loss. On the rare occasion that you decide that eating less needs to be a priority for a short while (days and weeks, not months and years), fat loss becomes a much smoother process. If we want to be healthier, it starts with becoming more capable. The reverse is also true. By constantly eating less and tearing yourself down, your metabolism, hormone function, and physical capabilities will take a nose dive if you’re always chasing weight/fat loss. In addition, your psychological health can take a huge hit. Its time for science to stand up and quit trying to figure out a way to trick physiology and let people know the facts. The fact is that getting stronger is and always has been a vital component of long term health and longevity (add in a little cardio and things work even better). We NEED to make these facts available to our friends, family, etc. and especially the younger generations if we want to see an overall improvement in the wellness of our society. The revolution will come in the form of the “UN-diet”.
