Hey....I have an idea!! Why dont we CLOSE the TART Trail during the harsh winter months? The $42,500 to hire a private contractor for annual snow plowing could be used to better clear sidewalks/intersections for people WALKING (especially the elderly!). During the winter, people can ride their trendy fat tire bicycles, jog and cross country ski at the areas State Park trail systems or the bicycle lanes in Traverse City (8th Street). (michigantrails.us/grand-traverse-county-michigan/grand-traverse-county-michigan-trails.html) REOPEN the TART Trail this Spring (no snow, ice & freezing temps.) for families, bicyclists, dog walkers, parents pushing strollers and in-line skaters. If you havent noticed, Grand Traverse County is experiencing a budget deficit for sometime now (this year its $700,000.00)....money is tight and they are currently seeking ways to CUT spending and possibly reduce services. I dont believe we should be prioritizing trail-clearing on the same OR HIGHER level as clearing city sidewalks like City Commissioners Tim Werner and Gary Howe state in this article. YIKES! Are you guys for real? It certainly appears Traverse City has NO budget problems as they enjoy spending tax payer dollars on things like this. Just my opinion.
