Hey! So this summer Im working as a selectional manager in human resources with a financial firm and theres one thing I want to mention and another I want to discuss. I know it the topic of white privilege has been discussed a lot on this forum, one post I was a part of someone had shared a link/file/pdf on how individuals with non-eurocentric names are looked over in job applications, and when I read that I thought naahhh, people cant actually be that disrespectful to not even bother to look at a resume from the person. But now that my job is actually that, I know first hand this is true and its not even done quietly. Ive been working here for about three weeks and on my first day of training my supervisor directly said to me If you see a name that looks foreign, just dont bother calling. The positions were looking to fill need fluent English speakers. And as I heard that I was actually disgusted, sick to my stomach in fact. As I felt more comfortable within my office space I spoke with the other selectional manager and asked her about what our supervisor had said, if we actually arent supposed to call individuals with non-eurocentric names. She said she was shocked to hear this from our supervisor as well when she first started but did not follow those instructions. As the past few weeks have gone by Ive made it my personal mission to call every single applicant and have a first interview over the phone with them, no matter what their name may be. A lot of times the candidates I call can speak perfect English and they have a great resume. Yesterday in fact I came across more than 5 candidates who had recently immigrated to Canada. A lady I spoke with had her mba in business and a masters in business/organizational psychology from India, and she also had worked in a major Indian bank and managed corporate accounts. I was speaking with this lady about an entry level management position. ENTRY LEVEL. With all her education this is what she is coming in for an interview for. It makes me so sad that this is the case for so many people who come to Canada. Now just because of one person dont think badly of the company. Its actually a great place to work and they help build careers for a lot of people. The state general agent (aka provincial agent, I work at the Ontario head office) is from Trinidad, and he also ran the head office in Hawaii. He came here and had 2 jobs before his current position. The great thing about the company I work with is how quickly you can move up if you work hard. Allowing people to have this chance to make something of themselves and knowing I helped them get there is actually pretty rewarding. Although the above is not my discussion topic I know it will generate a lot of comments. However, this is the topic I would like to see most comments about, How can recruiters, such as myself, reach out to individuals looking for employment other than indeed or kijiji? I would like to take into consideration using different job mediums based on region and demographic. Its become apparent to me that different age groups will search for jobs different. People in different stages in their life will use different mediums as well, for example how do we reach individuals who are unhappy with their employment but not necessarily looking? How do we reach individuals who arent always on the internet? Another factor I mentioned was different regions, people in different areas use different job mediums. For example in London we have a lot of London based job boards, but me posting on there wont get me the people Im looking to hire for Mississuaga. If you have any ideas on this or other road blocks in recruiters getting word out to potential candidates, Id like to discuss it! Also if you or a friend need a full time job and you have a car, and are in the london, cambridge, brantford, guelph, kitchener, waterloo, hamilton areas then message me and I can let you know about the CSR and sales positions were hiring for!
