Hey Vancouverites, With all the furor over Seaworld and Taiji, its easy to forget whats happening in your own back yard. In a time when cetacean captivity is being called into question, the Vancouver Aquarium is planning a $100 million expansion and the acquirement of new Beluga whales. Doesnt this seem like a step in the wrong direction for a city that has already applied public pressure to close down most of the cruel exhibits at the aquarium. Personally, Ive seen more fur around my neighborhood this year than in years past. Are the ideologies of Vancouverites, when it comes to animal rights, regressing? I think if we agree its unacceptable to keep Polar Bears, Killer Whales, and dolphins in captivity, then the same must apply to Beluga Whales. The Vancouver Aquariums decision to expand their collection of captive cetaceans deserves to be met with an appropriate response. I hope our great city will do whats right.
