Hey, Why Are You Laughing? Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.” The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy. Psalms 126:2-3 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10:10 On my most recent camping trip, I asked a friend, “Am I ruining things by being so slow?” He said, “We keep you around for comedic relief.” You know I laugh and try to make others laugh as much as the next guy. Okay, I probably do it more than the next guy. You will never guess why I do this. Go ahead take a guess. Did anyone say, “Because you are happy”? Bing, bing, bing. You are a winner. Yep. I am happy. The laughter in my mouth comes from a grateful and happy heart. Why is my heart happy? Because the Lord has done great things for me and I am filled with joy. Do you know that others are watching us as Christians? Some think we are an odd bunch believing in the unseen and what they consider a fairytale. They watch to see what we are doing. They have read the Bible or heard of it, and they think it is gloom and doom, all fire and brimstone, and they ask, “What in the world are they laughing at? What are they singing about? What do they have to be happy about?” How is it supposed to look to be a Christian? A long face, serious looks and judgmental attitudes—is that what we look like to others? Jesus died for all of us. He gave all who believe assurance in heaven with him and our Father. We have been freed from sin and self-hatred. We are free from all that binds us through Jesus. He has given us a confident and loving life. I am saved. I am going to spend eternity in heaven. I have God, who loves me and created the universe, listening to my prayers all day every day, and the King of kings is coming back to get me on that day. Why wouldn’t I be happy? Let’s laugh, sing songs of joy, and show our gratitude through love and service to one another and to God. When others ask what we have to laugh about, let’s not make them wonder. Let’s tell them.
