Hey everyone! My name is Ruth, Im from Port Hope, Ontario (about 2 hours west of Kingston), and Im currently living in Talca, Chile. I was actually accepted to Queens last year and was originally planning on going right after Grade 12, but I decided to take some time off and spend my gap year abroad on exchange with Rotary, learning Spanish and traveling South America instead. So now I have the pleasure of joining all of you wonderful people in the Class of 2018! Ill be pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), and Im intending on majoring in Linguistics along with a minor in World Languages and hopefully the addition of an International Studies Certificate. I now speak fluent Spanish (yay, thanks Chile!) and Im moderately fluent in French (I was in the Late French Immersion Program), so Im hoping to study both these languages during my four years, plus as many more as I can fit into my schedule. If anyone is currently studying a foreign language, regardless of which one it happens to be/the level youre studying it at, please hit me up with some information or advice! Besides Linguistics/Languages, Im really interested in Psychology, Philosophy, Geography, International Development and Biology, so Im hoping to take some courses in a few of those areas as well. Also, Ive totally caught a permanent travel bug, so if anyone has experience with student exchanges, whether it be a summer term at BISC or a full year abroad, Id love to hear all about it! Apart from academics, I love being involved and keeping busy, so Im super excited to check out some of the clubs and organizations at Queens. In high school I volunteered at my local hospital, I was a Link Leader, a French and Math tutor, Student Body Prime Minister, a member of a humanitarian team that volunteered in Tanzania with HIV/AIDS orphans and I also loved participating in various fundraisers like Halloween for Hunger and Fast for Funds. Im hoping to get involved with similar groups during my four years at Queens, but Id like to expand my interests and try some new things, particularly Rotaract! I also played (and sometimes coached, due to a torn ACL) a variety of sports during high school, including basketball, tennis, badminton and frisbee - but the sport that will forever have my heart is definitely soccer. Ive played recreationally since I was three and competitively since I was eight, and I mixed in a few winter indoor seasons here and there. Sadly, I havent played many sports (unless you count physiotherapy, rock on) over the past year due to my aforementioned torn ACL, but Im hoping that once Im back in Canada and have it repaired, I will be able to join some intramural or competitive teams at Queens by at least second year. Despite how much I love being on the go, I do definitely enjoy relaxing and binge-watching Netflix, especially when theres school work to be done (I can be a huuuuge procrastinator). I dont have much of an attention span for movies but I do love a lot of TV series, like The Office, Friends, The Mentalist, How I Met Your Mother, Criminal Minds, One Tree Hill, The Big Bang Theory, The Bachelor/ette, Modern Family, Community, The O.C., and Scrubs. As for music, my taste really varies from genre to genre, but some of my favourite artists include Jack Johnson, Gregory Alan Isakov, Passenger, The Script, City & Colour, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, The Black Keys, Wakey!Wakey!, James Morrison, Kings of Leon, Jason Mraz, John Mayer, The Honorary Title, Ed Sheeran, Adele, Autumn Hill, Chad Brownlee, Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw, The Fray and The Lumineers. (And of course, anything Reggaeton. You cant go to South America and not develop at least a slight obsession with Reggaeton.) While I did thoroughly enjoy The Fault in Our Stars, I dont really read much fiction these days and tend to lean towards books/articles on Linguistics, Psych, Philosophy, Languages, and those sorts of things. My favourite food is anything Greek, Italian or Mexican, but Im pretty sure I could also live off a lifetime supply of Triscuits with hummus. My favourite drink would have to be OJ with extra pulp (unless were talking booze, in which case thatd be a cold Whiskey Sour), my favourite colour is red (oops, I mean Tricolour, of course) and my favourite holiday is definitely Halloween. Oh I also work as a supervisor and occasional cashier at the local grocery store, so if you want to bond over produce codes or customers who leave things in the magazine racks, Im so down. Other hobbies of mine include traveling, baking, drawing, partying, journaling, drama, volunteering, outdoor rec, and daydreaming about our beautiful campus/future home and life at Queens. Ive been keeping up with all of the new bios and posts ever since this page was created and its been making me so excited to move into res and meet all of you incredible people! Feel free to message or add me if anything in my accidentally super long bio caught your eye or if you just want to chat. Cha Gheill! P.S. Heres a picture of me (the decimal point) from Halloween of Grade 12, just for good measure
