Hey fam, Sewa Spotlight is back! In this weeks Spotlight is Mandeep Singh. This is a special Spotlight because Mandeep is Sewas founder. Using Mandeeps ideas, what was formerly Columbias Sikh Student Association transformed into CU Sewa, a social justice organization based on the values of Sikhi. Since then, Sewa has grown and gone in new directions, but the foundations for an influential group trying to tackle a range of important social issues were originally laid down by Mandeep. Thanks Mandeep for your contributions to our community! Mandeep (aka Cha Vala) is a senior from NYC majoring in Urban Studies and minoring in Business Management. Coming to Columbia, he felt that there was a need for a campus organization that focused on community service and social justice. Building off the fundamental values of Sikhism, he helped to create Sewa to orgranize and target many issues that needed more spearheading! On campus, Manddep is currently in the process of starting a new student group: Columbia First-Generation Low-Income Partnership (FLIP). He has also been involved extensively in projects in Richmond Hill, Queens. He is working with a few other organizers on a Punjabi youth empowerment program called ROOP NY (Richmond Hill Organizing Opportunity for Punjabi Youth). This summer, Mandeep was an intern for Pixatel Systems. He helped launch the companys pilot program - a program funded by USAID that aims to increase numeracy and literarcy rates in rural village through technology - in Punjab. FUN FACT: During the fall of my junior year, Mandeep had the privilege to study abroad through a program called IHP Cities in the 21st Century. He lived and studied in New Orleans, Brazil, South Africa and Vietnam! You should definitely ask him about it sometime. Mandeeps role model is Gurnoor Tucker! I want to be like him when I grow up :) says Mandeep. Mandeep is very proud to see how far Sewa has come. As a senior advisor, it makes him very happy to see the organization work so effectively and effeciently. He is happy to see how our mentorship program with the Department of Justice and how our weeklong series of events on human rights violations in Punjab is coming together! Mandeeps career goal is to one day become Mayor of New York.
