Hey guys - 700 thousand meatloaf lovers out there from yesterdays post!! Make sure you purchase grass fed and finished beef over the grain fed alternative, especially if you value the health of the food that you feed yourself and your family, as well as the health of the animals you choose to eat, the health of the land and also to support the farmers that are doing things in tune with nature...it really just makes so much sense that the health of the animal directly correlates to the health of the animal that is eating it. Remember also that this message is about moderate amounts of protein per person and eating nose to tail, it isnt about mountains of steak, but enough to meet our protein requirements and remember to fill the plate or lunch box with fibrous vegetables and good amounts of good quality fat from avos, nuts, seeds, coconuts and of course the fat from land and sea animals on a health diet. I feel like I needed to give away a book today after reading this story yesterday by Melissa Stainwald as it was so touching and powerful... My husband NEVER EVER cooks but as I was in bed sick and couldnt cook, he and my teenage son followed your recipie (I didnt think they knew how). The results were so yum and moist and boy are they proud! Thanks for the inspiration! My hubby said, I can see now how people get hooked on cooking, I couldnt wait to see if it turned out! I hope you are feeling better Melissa and please email hello@thepaleoway and please give us an address and who you would like the book made out to if you already have one. Today we are joined by a friend of mine Rocky Pellegrino who has been a great support to me since coming out publicly with this so called FAD way of living and he is a shining star of what is achievable Hi Pete!, Back in February 2012 I tipped the scales at 154.5kg. I had high blood pressure and was on medication as a result. I had sleep apnea, depression (also medicated), chronic back pain, hayfever, and asthma and got puffed without doing much. One day I saw a photo of myself taken at a friends wedding and I decided I needed to do something to improve my health. I had recently heard about an AFL star following a nutrition plan quite similar to paleo in that it cuts grains and dairy but allows legumes as its main source of carbs. I lost a lot of weight quickly on the diet and within 6 months was weighing in at 130kg. I still had high blood pressure, sleep apnea and depression but my back was feeling a fair bit better. I set a goal to complete the first Australian Spartan Race in March 2013 so I was training hard and continuing to diet, my weight loss was slowing but I was getting fitter. I switched up my diet slightly looking for the weight loss and improved health to continue and while sustainable, the weight loss was slow and I still had all my medical issues. In 2013 I decided to have a career change and get qualified as a PT. During my course and the associated learning, I started hearing about Paleolithic Nutrition, so I set about researching it, and began to see the positive effects it was having on others. I started following a Paleo Lifestyle (and still do to this day) and quickly dropped more weight, I increased dramatically my micro-nutrient intake by varying my veggies more, including things like liver etc that I had never previously eaten, and focusing on my Omega-6:Omega-3 ratio. I started to notice how much more energy I had and how much better I felt. I no longer had hayfever (even during spring which was always worst for me) and my back was no longer sore... Ever! I have always monitored my own blood pressure and it was stable, so I spoke to my GP and we worked out a plan to come off the medications... I kept monitoring and now without them my blood pressure is normal! I no longer have sleep apnea and have stopped my depression medication and have been so much better mentally as well, and for the first time since early high school I weigh under 100kg! I got down to 90kgs (64.5kgs lost) but after recent shoulder surgery to repair an AC joint I injured doing sports (never thought Id say that a few years back, cause you cant get injured watching sports!) I have stabilized at ~94kgs. Im happy with where Im at, and my health has never been better. Yes, the nutritional plans I used along the was were helpful as they both either cut refined carbohydrates, however it wasnt until I found the paleo lifestyle and allowed myself to have healthy fats, balanced my omega-3, focused on nutrient profiles and cut legumes that I corrected my blood pressure and sleep apnea, hayfever and asthma. Since my success I have become qualified as a nutritionist and have helped other family and friends improve a range of autoimmune conditions (such as fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and IBS) and improve their health even avoiding type 2 diabetes (from a pre-diabetic diagnosis), all with the use of an autoimmune protocol version of Paleo to identify food triggers. The changes have been quite simply amazing. I believe that as we have evolved as a species we have lost touch with the way our ancestors lived. As a result we now rely heavily on eating food that is convenient, quick and processed. The fact these nutrient poor, additive and toxin filled, product can be designed to fit the dietary guidelines shows that they are out of date. We must focus on quality foods, from sustainable sources to increase our nutrient density and improve our health. We are struggling in a world that requires us to work longer, robbing us of the time required to focus on the most important things in life, our families and ourselves! We have to change this for the betterment of our future. Over my journey I have learnt that each person is unique, what worked for me wont always work for the next person. Maybe my next client will have a young family that makes sticking to a more restrictive meal plan harder, or maybe they need flexability in your training volume and nutrition. Well, this is where my business is different. I aim to provide flexability to fit the clients lifestyle and I provide individualised programming of both training and nutrition. My main business goal is to help others to find their inner WARRIOR!
