Hey guys. A few of you have asked me about stimulus control. This will be a long post but it will explain what I mean. Stimulus control is your ultimate goal for each behavior. However, its only one part of Fluency. There are 3 parts to Fluency (PaLS, 3 Ds, and Stimulus Control. PaLS means Precision, Latency and Speed. This is what you need to concentrate on when its a NEW behavior. Precision is the final, polished look of the goal behavior. Latency is the amount of time that passes between delivery of the cue and when the dog initiates his response. Speed is how long it takes for your dog to perform the behavior. Once you have the behavior the way you want it, you can start working on the 3 Ds. Those are distractions, duration and distance. The last thing you want to work on is stimulus control. Essentially, stimulus control means that within the context of a training session the dog offers the behavior when it perceives the cue and does not offer the behavior in the absence of the cue. There are 4 rules for SC... -The behavior occurs immediately when the conditioned stimulus (cue) is given. -The behavior never occurs in the absence of the stimulus (cue). -The behavior never occurs in response to some other stimulus (cue). -No other behavior occurs in response to this stimulus (cue). I know all of this may be confusing but I wanted to try to clear up some things for people. So remember... for those of you teaching these behaviors for the first time... work on PaLS first. For those of you that already have the tricks but want to refine them you can start working on the 3 Ds and stimulus control.
