Hey guys, I bought a Mexi Esquire Classic back in 07. I own a Relic Nocaster and a 76 Telecaster Custom and by a wide measure on both of those guitars the pickup selector switch was set to the bridge pickup only. I figured that an Esquire would just work for me immediately. Such was not the case. I could not understand why I felt so out on a limb with my Esquire than I was when playing my other Teles with pickup selector set for the bridge pickup. I tried a LOT of stuff... new bridge plate, new saddles (Glendale Outlaw), complete new wiring (The Eldred Mod), Tonestyler Tone control, I even replaced the body with a pine body which I finished myself with Formbys Tung Oil finish... I spent a lot of time and money because I genuinely liked the guitar. Alone at home it played absolutely great and had killer response. As much as I wanted to, I just could not feel like my Esquire was one of my Varsity Squad First String player. That all changed after I followed an impulse with a marketing email from Seymour Duncan Pickups. Duncans Custom Shop offers the Seymour Duncan BG1400 (Billy Gibbons) Telecaster bridge pickup. It is a stacked humbucker, but dont let the H-word scare you off. It sounds soooooo Tele! Plus it doesnt hum! It was $150.00 + $9.74 s&h. That pickup totally transformed my Esquire! One word of warning... it is a very strong pickup measurement-wise, my Custom Shop pickup is logged at 30.0K DC Resistance. I dont know what that number means but it is related to the strength of pickup output. My pickup is VERY Tele and not Distort-O-Tone. The only reason I mention the output DC Resistance measurement is that a bridge pickup that is too powerful in its relationship with the neck pickup might overwhelm in the middle position of the pickup selector. I have no idea since my Esquire has only one pickup (like they should be IMHO). And to be completely honest I was put off by the big numbers in DC Resistance. I do not like hot pickups in general. I feel that pickups wound hot to slam the amps preamp tubes are more limiting than enabling. Anyway, at least in my case the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop changed my Esquire into a monster. Clear wonderful Tele Tone with killer dynamics. Sorry so wordy, but I would have had a lot less to say if I didnt feel the need to explain that the pickup with the hot measurement of DC Resistance does not sound like a hot Distort-O-Tone pickup.
