Hey, looky here another post...Figured I would just bombard everyone at once and get it over with. Had some discussions about helping new teams out with a weekly strategy or playing tips post. This is an effort to help teams figure things out and make playing competitive but FUN. This is an effort to promote sportsmanship between teams as well, so if you have experience playing kickball and care to share some basic strategies with rookie or inexperienced teams, I am sure we as a league will be much better off. You dont have to give out all your secrets (this is kickball afterall, so I dont see too many trade secrets out there to begin with). So, my tip for this week is: Dont chase outs, live to fight another kicker. I am not saying to let people just get on base, but sometimes its better to just hold the ball instead of going for an out you have little chance of making. For instance, runner on first tries to make it to third on the kick. Defense throws to third but runner still makes it safely, but now the defense notices runner rounding first is several steps towards second. The defense tries to throw back to first but that runner makes it back safely AND the runner from third scores. Or worse, the defense throws the ball away and not only does the runner at third score, but now the runner (that was going back to first anyway) now makes it to third. This can also be listed as a damage control strategy. Sometimes it pays off playing defense aggressively, but more times than not, I see balls get thrown away and extra bases given to the kicking team. So, thats just my 2 cents for this week. Hopefully it helps some teams out there.
