Hi All, I was just reviewing the monthly recap for the precinct, specifically related to burglaries and burglary arrests. Although the month of November we saw an increase in burglaries compared to a year ago, we made some very significant arrests for residential, commercial and vehicle burglaries. Our vehicle burglaries have increased significantly for the month which is something that is for the most part preventable. Vehicle burglaries are crimes of opportunity. An unlocked vehicle door is the most common reason for a vehicle burglary or the simple point of leaving something in sight inside your vehicle. A purse, laptop, iPod or even a navigation device in your vehicle is a target for a burglar to break your window and steal the item. Please keep all items out of sight or better yet not in the vehicle at all ( a towel or sweatshirt covering up a computer bag on the rear seat is not a theft deterrent....sorry). Garage remote control devices are also sought after things to steal....grab the remote control and some paperwork from the glove box and ta-da ... a criminal now has your address and keys to your house (who locks the door from the garage to the house anyways). As far as the residential burglaries are concerned...we did see an increase this month but we also had some very significant arrests that we believe are responsible for a good portion of the crimes. For November, precinct wide, we had around 30-35 individual burglary related arrests. As I have talked about before a burglar does not commit one crime then retire...they can and will continue to commit crimes to either satisfy a drug habit or for some other financial problem. The major reason on some of these arrests that we were able to catch the suspects was because of the good work you all do in watching and reporting the suspicious behaviors!!!! I have said it before and I will say it again... you as citizens will catch more burglars then the police department will.... what I mean by that is you will witness the activity and do the right thing in calling the police... we will go out and catch /arrest the criminals but we need to have good solid information and witnesses to the crimes. Please keep up the good work and together we will get the numbers down!!! Have a great rest of the week... I am off for a few days and will be back Monday.
