Hi Andrew, The Long Reef discussion is very well timed, I would like to share with you an experience from last week. I used to live on the Fisherman’s basin from 1967- 1972, I fished every morning and surfed every afternoon as kid growing up in paradise. For pocket money to buy tackle, I would help the pro fisherman drag the old clinker lobster boats down to the water. When outside, I would troll smith jigs on blind cord for Kingies, pull/ rebait their traps, anything to be on the water. Last Wednesday 23 April, 2014, some 46 years later, I took my 12 year old nephew on a fishing trip to the basin and the Long Reef platform. Armed with 2 flick sticks, some white bait and beach worms, we fished the sand corners, wash and rock channels. As we walked around the rock platforms on the rising tide, (1.30pm), I showed young Charlie numerous Luderick and Drummer tailing in 10 inches of water on the cunji/ cabbage beds. Within 3 minutes of casting the first worm, we had a whiting, then another and another, a bream and 2 exciting hook ups with Long Toms. Tired of catching Whiting we moved back to the rock channels where we saw the Drummer, I floated a half white bait back under a cork where it was nailed by a kilo plus bream. We got 3 more then two Drummer using cabbage scraped off the cunji. It was one of the best sessions on light tackle with a Kid that I can remember, particularly given it was in the middle of a 29 C day. The fishing last week was as good if not better than anything I can remember from my childhood in exactly the same places, fishing the same way. When I got home, I was so moved by the experience and quality of the fish stocks that I sent an e-mail to renowned Marine Biologist, Dr Julian Pepperell to share the good news on just how good a shape is Long Reef and its environments. Not sure where Mr Flook has been looking but he is clearly out of touch on the reality of Long Reef! Perhaps he should take a kid fishing there and put some joy back in his life! Best, John
