Hi Brad We’ve recently had automatic gates installed at the top of a long panhandle drive. We cannot see the gates from the house. I’d like your opinion as to which of the following is better, safety-wise: • The installers left the gates on totally manual. We need to press our remote (having walked or driven 2/3 of driveway up steep hill) or the button on the intercom installed in the kitchen to open. Gates remain open until next time we press button/remote. Disadvantage is when the visitor leaves as we (in house) can’t tell when he’s gone to close the gate. Frequently found it open until I changed it to . . . • Gates open when button pushed and automatically close 10 seconds later. I prefer this but my husband doesn’t as he’s worried if 2 or more cars enter/leave together one may get scrunched by closing gates. My response is to put up a sign, “Gates close automatically after 10 seconds.” He wants to . . • Install a laser beam that, when broken, will halt the closing of the gates. My argument there is that any intruders will simply put a brick in the way of the beam to keep the gates open for a quick getaway. Your comments will be appreciated. Many thanks.
