Hi Everybody, Quintus O Baggins here. Just a word about our first guest of the Autumn Season, the wonderful Steve Ashley. Steve was once described in the Melody Maker as, One of the finest singer-songwriters in Britain, if not the entire English-speaking world. Thats a big claim but they meant it! The Daily Telegraph said he had, an extraordinary gift for creating material of true folk quality. Such publications do not make comments like that idly and Steves excellent songs have been covered by some of the biggest names on the British Folk scene: Fairport Convention, Martin Simpson, Phil Beer and Maggie Boyle are just a few of the stellar performers who rate Mr. Ashleys work highly enough to play and record it! Recently no lesser duo than our own Chris & Debbie Lee have been including a couple of Steve Ashley songs in their repertoire at The Raven. Steve is possessed of a great voice, is a fine guitarist and a first-class songwriter. He doesnt gig in the North very often so weve very happy that when he does take the Northern road out of Cheltenham, our club is always on the list of places he wants to play. If you know Steve then you dont really need me to tell you these things but if you are unfamiliar with his work then you will be in for a real treat if you come and check him out at The Bear & Billet on Sunday Night (28th September 8-30 pm £8-00 Admission).
