Hi Everyone, I wanted to let you know about an exciting project that is happening in Calgary,AB, Canada. MPact, a dance organization that produces shows with a social message mpactdance and Legacy One, a hip hop crew that does dance residencies in many schools across Canada legacyone.ca are teaming up to fundraise and own a space called THE LAB. This will be a safe space for all dancers, youth and at risk youth to expand in their interests and creativity mainly in the culture of hip hop and also exploring other dance styles as well. We are gearing up our #vote4thelabcampaign leading up to Dec 2 when voting starts for 10 days strait. The competition is tight. We need 5000 committed voters who will vote every day for those 10 days. If we win, the Aviva Community fund will be giving us $150,000 to get The Lab up and running! More info about The Lab: Mission Statement: To invest in the lives of vulnerable youth by providing a place of value, belonging and life skills by means of community, courage and compassion through urban arts. Vision statement: The Lab Urban Arts Centre will be a place of innovation and creativity for vulnerable youth and local artists. The Lab will redefine community, positively impact the lives of youth-at-risk and create a generation of courageous, compassionate citizens contributing to society. Im wondering if you would be willing to help us with the campaign? The idea is this: We are asking people to visit vote4thelab/ and pledge to vote by submitting their email so we can send out reminders during the 10 days. (we will not be using the email for any other time or for any other purpose) Would you be willing to: 1. pledge to vote on the website 2. Post a status, or a short video saying: Im one of the 5000 who is going to #vote4thelab every day dec 2-11. (you can tweet and instagram too!) Im asking strategic people to help us with this to create a buzz. I would love it if youre willing to do this, if you could do so this week. Let me know if youre down to help us What is The Lab? Two things: 1. Provide an avenue for at-risk youth to engage in empowering hip hop elements and life skills through programming, leadership development and community. 2. Provide a space for artists to collaborate, lab, session, create. Also creates an opportunity for at risk youth to find community with artists in the city who can mentor and come along side. How we will do this: - providing instruction in bboying by local bboys who will not only teach the art of breaking but the values of community, compassion and courage that come through cyphering. - providing instruction in legal graffiti by established graffiti artists in our city such as The Kid Bello. - providing instruction in DJing, emceeing and music creation by local DJ’s and musicians in our city who produce a positive hip hop message. - providing opportunities to expand creativity in urban dance by exploring integration of other freestyle dance movements in latin, african, house and contemporary - providing conversational type workshops with professional dancers who have either made dance a career or how they balance their professional career with their dance career. Covering topics such as how hard work, graduating from high school and getting a post secondary education is important and how it can work for dance. - providing courses on entreprenurial endeavors, leadership skills - providing life skills through every avenue of instruction we provide - providing work experience and training in the production of our yearly shows in local theatres around Calgary - possible training to be a part of the touring Legacy One crew - connecting local artists with individual youth for one on one mentorship culturerebel/?p=3620 #vote4thelab #thelab Through this space individuals will gain life skills of courage, encouragement, sense of purpose, compassion, community, increased confidence, focus and responsibility. This is a small step to give people a place to be safe and be around positivity and eventually make an inspiring contribution to humanity. We are applying to many funding initiatives to help sustain this project. However we need your help! avivacommunityfund.org/about/aboutthecompetition The Aviva community grant is won by 2 major rounds of voting and then a small panel will decide out of the top 30 who will win the grand price of $150,000. Through hard work we have made it to the semi-finals. We need you who believe in what we are doing to vote everyday from Dec 2-12, 2013. With a click of a button during that time period you are being apart of something that will change an individuals life. Tell everyone you know to join us! Below you will see the link on how to vote and you can also join our Facebook page Vote For The Lab, to keep up on the updates of how we are doing.
