Hi Everyone. This is just a quick post concerning your tanks and this crazy heat we are experiencing at the moment. The first thing that I always say is DON’T PANIC!!! Most fish are tough little things and can take quite high temperatures even to the mid 80 with out to much hassle, because the temperature rises slowly the fishes will adjust accordingly. By doing large water changes with cooler water is where it goes wrong, the sudden drop in temperature and then the eventual rise will shock the fish. Look at the overriding problem rather than the short term cure. Make sure there is always fresh air coming into the room, open windows draw curtains or blinds to cut out the light, turning off tank lights is always a winner as well and if it get really bad freeze some bottled water and float that into the tank. Air pumps are brilliant at maintaining a good oxygen level because warm water doesnt hold a lot of dissolved oxygen, keep it running all night as well. Go easy on the feeding even think about cutting it down to one feed every other day, the fish won’t mind at all but any extra urine will mean the bacteria in the filter works double time and to do that it will use up even more oxygen. Also turning down or turning off your heater won’t do a thing, all heaters are thermostatically controlled so in this warm weather I doubt they are even working. Just make sure the temperature of the tank doesnt see-saw up and down for that will kill your fish faster than warm water will ever do. Good luck :-)
