Hi Everyone….continuing on with Phonological Awareness: Creating activities that encourage children to listen to and think about and name sounds we hear around us……..encourage children to pay attention to sounds and learn to identify them, this can make it much easier for them to work out alphabet sounds later when they learn to read and write. Sounds in our Environment: Talk about the sounds around us; that noisy aeroplane, can you hear a dog barking, encourage children to STOP and LISTEN to noises going on around them, as they get older they will be able to name these sounds and where they are coming from Ask questions about what they hear: Was that sound a car or a truck? Was that a cat or a dog? Was it loud or quiet? Make a sounds poster: Cut pictures from magazines of things that make sounds(truck, kitchen mixer, tv, radio, animals) as the children glue the pictures on ask them if they know the sound it makes? Encourage children to listen with their eyes closed and identify sounds both inside and outside the room, eg. Cars driving past, or someone sniffing in the room, a bird tweeting, a dog barking. Have fun thinking of different sounds you and the children can make………and keep listening and singing along to nursery rhymes and children’s songs, children are like sponges they absorb what is going on around them. Stop and think about all the sounds and noises we hear in a day….these are a learning opportunity
