Hi, Im sure you guys have seen this video before, but its something that interests me. Im not on the views of Hitchens who thinks that religion is the root of all evil and that religion poisons everything. I am of the view that people need educated to a certain degree in order to have rational and good critical thinking skills. We here as atheists are only thus, because we have spent the time and effort into looking into theism and rejecting it. I think it is too simplistic to think that religion is the sole cause of violence as it is more complex than that. It may be due to socio, economical factors too. I am also of the view that change only comes from within and if we want to irradiate religion, we have to raise peoples consciousness awareness within those groups such as Islam, to educate them to such an extent that they can inherently see the kind of mental abuse that these religious systems have on the mind and the outside communities (those that are not muslim). Education is the key and I know this is harder said than done, because the religious mind thrives on ignorance. I am meaning to read Michael Shermers book soon (Why people believe strange things), which might help explain better, a psychological perspective on beliefs. I know from my own research that the brain is not to be trusted. Objectivity must supersede subjectivity and we must shun the superstitious and irrational. Everyone has irrational thoughts, it is part of being human, the key to over coming these thoughts, takes a bit of effort. For example, I have a fear of sharks, when I swim in seas Im always worried about them. But I have to rationalise these fears by reminding myself of objective facts such as the very small percentage of shark attacks per year and an even smaller percent of fatal attacks. But as I said, this is just an example to illustrate that we all have irrational thoughts. https://youtube/watch?v=PzusSqcotDw
