Hi, Im sure youve seen the harrowing stories about elephant slaughter in the news. Its crazy – 96 elephants are killed every day in Africa for their ivory tusks. And we know that a lot of that illegal ivory heads right to the U.S., which is the worlds second largest market for ivory. The good news is that the U.S. is taking serious steps to save elephants – New Jersey just enacted a ban on the sale of ivory and the Obama Administration has proposed a federal ban. But unfortunately, our opponents are just as serious. Groups that profit from the ivory trade – or would be merely inconvenienced by the ban – are trying to prevent the Administration from acting, essentially eliminating the ivory ban altogether. Worse yet, their actions could also block states from acting, effectively repealing portions of the New Jersey State ban. I just sent a letter to my members of Congress asking them to stave off any and all attacks on the proposed federal ivory ban.
