Hi Milo I wonder if you may know the answer to this or if best to check with the insurance co, I thank you for all your hard work re drainage info and would like to know, if we did have another rain fall like the last and roads and houses were to flood, would this be covered under insurance. I know there are many low line areas where houses have been built but wondered what happens to the people if there houses were to flood due to this being created by local council. Thank you Renae. Pilbara Your Voice Renae the answer is not simple which normally means ‘NO’ A very good question and one I have been thinking about. I believe the blame sits squarely on our council and state governments shoulders, there are a few factors that will have to be taken into consideration. The most important is the tide height at the time of the rain, even tho you my live in South Hedland the construction of the new highway bypass has created a ‘flood basin’ or a ‘catchment area’ so when the tide is at its highest point and it’s raining hard the water will back up due to the tide, that is called storm surge and insurance companies don’t payout on natural disasters’. I believe storm surge will affect South Hedland and The Rural Estate. The next point is the amount of rain falling, it is not uncommon for 100-400mm in short periods, in our area of the state, this may be ok as a one off but when we receive constant heavy rain in consecutive days, we will be in the shit, why? Our land has the ability to absorb huge amounts of water, that’s why when it rains a little the water is gone the next day, but when we get constant rain for a few days the land gets waterlogged, this scenario is common in this part of the country, so put them together and we have a very big problem!! Constant heavy rain, a man made Highway as a levy bank or dam, FMG’s rail line on the other side of town channelling water to South Creek as well, this has created a flood basin, add the tide height, not looking good is it. Not convinced? To get an idea of the seriousness of the situation all people have to do is look at pictures’ of some of our well known rivers after big rains, The Yule River, Turner River, Degray River are great examples, there are some photos of Degray at full flow on my website. So who is going to pay for this planning ‘ballsup’, we will because the town and state government will have thousand dollar an hour QC,s Barristers and lawyers that will team up against the people, using our tax and rate revenue money to pay the legal bill. Who can stand up against that?
