Hi Ms. Powder friends, this is Powder’s Mom, sorry that I - TopicsExpress

Hi Ms. Powder friends, this is Powder’s Mom, sorry that I worried some of you last night with no post. It has been quiet an emotional roller coaster ride these pass couple of days. Her tumor was a surprise, I took her to a specialist because I was concerned with her senior panel test result (encourage everyone to get this blood test 2x a year), and because she has had several UTIs I wanted to make sure her kidneys were working OK. The doc did a sonogram to check the kidneys and it is then she discovered the mass by her liver, she could not tell how much if any of the liver is involved, but she did mention is has made the gallbladder to be in a weird position. The good news is the doc says her kidneys will outlive her! So any special diet to help the kidneys is no longer a concern and I will let her eat whatever she wants. Now based on the location and the shape of the mass she believes it is a Hemangiosarcoma (HSA). This type of tumor is malignant tumor of the blood vessel cells. When researching this type of cancer I found that German Shepard’s (along with other types of large dogs) are prone to this type of cancer. The doc’s concern and know my concern is that these tumors are blood filled and there is no indications of when the tumor will burst and basically the dog will bleed out on the inside. She said Powder is stable but she could not tell me if or when the tumor could begin leaking or rupture, “It could be in five hours or five weeks”. (Sorry for the long post by the way, just need to explain everything). What I have found out is that surgery can remove the tumor but since it is cell based it will return. Surgery with chemo extends survival rate a little longer but not by much. To compound this her DM is an issue, any surgery for a dog with DM is risky, it is not advise to use anesthesia as it will “speed up” the DM, being that she is in the “late stage” of DM I have determine (firmly) that Powder will not undergo any type of surgery, the risk is not worth the outcome. Her doctor will call me on Monday where we will discuss the urinalysis and I will ask her for a referral to an oncologist to discuss his/her opinion of the sonogram. What I do know for a fact is that Powder is blessed with so many people who have expressed their love and shared their prayers for my girl, your support and words of encouragement mean more to me than I could ever repay, it gives me strength and helps me to keep a positive outlook. It is good to know there are very kind, caring people that truly understand the bond between animals and humans. I don’t even want to think about life without my girl with me. I will keep everyone informed to her progress, but if I miss or late in posting do not worry, sometimes the grief is overwhelming and I have to step away for a while I hope you will understand. I am forever grateful for your support
