Hi! This group is a big inspiration to make me work harder, i thought i would give something in return. I´m working on a oil painting of a cast at Atelier stockholm, amazing school by the way!:) I´m at the stage of using raw umber, black and white, mainly to control temperature and values.I thought i would give an insight to the process we use if you guys are interested in oils. Once we have decided on our lighting setup we begin by drawing the image out in charcoal. This is a simplified drawing and we don´t aim for values or details. All we need is a clear drawing and a sense of light. So now we have an easy to read drawing that we can break down into lines on transfer paper. If anyone has questions on transferring or anything else feel free to pm me. 1. We start painting a raw umber sketch showing just the darks and lights while still referring to the cast to re-adjust any mistakes in the drawing. Raw umber because it dries fast! 2. I usually like to lightly wash in a background so i can see the cast clearly, I then key it. So i add the brightest brights. This makes the next process a little easier. 3. Work in the mid tones. I try to do this quite quickly so i can blend the paint to keep edges soft. I didn´t really worry too much about whether i was nailing the values here. 4. Big look! This is the fun bit where you aim to hit values, i also start laying on thicker paint to boost the value range. Hitting the right values will create depth. 5. Present stage: I get easily carried away on rendering, starting with the facial features. It´s also the focal point, obviously. Things still need to be pushed into the darks for example his left horn is way too prominent. Otherwise i have another 5 weeks of rendering wee! Always remember to squint! The almost non visable parts of the cast are very visable with fully opened eyes. Using a black mirror or more conveniently an iphone´s blank screen to mirror the image will give you a better idea on whether you are hitting the correct values. Hopefully this is beneficial and clear enough. I think in a way it applies to digital work if you are aiming to do studies, still lifes etc. I´m also learning so correct me if im wrong, these are the first few months i´ve used oils! Greatly appreciated:)! Here is a link artofdanielwalsh.tumblr/post/103589741698
