Hi Ultimate World: This weekend in Boxcars last game at NC - TopicsExpress

Hi Ultimate World: This weekend in Boxcars last game at NC Mixed Sectionals, our team captain, Suzanne Mama Derby-Wright, made an incredible D in the end zone and collided incredibly hard with the girl she was guarding after the play (through no fault of either player). She landed even harder on the heel of her opponents cleat and sustained what we thought could be a broken rib or two (we were wrong, it was far more serious). Despite the pain, she joked with us, asking if she was done for the day. For those that know Suzanne, and how she plays, you wouldnt be surprised that her biggest concern was that she was unable to continue to compete alongside her teammates. Toward the end of the game, Suzanne began to feel dizzy and told our teammate Amber, who was monitoring her. She then passed out into Ambers arms. We immediately called 911. Suzanne regained consciousness after a minute, remembering everything that had happened thus far into the day. We kept her awake till the paramedics arrived to take her to the hospital. As it turns out, she not only broke two of her ribs, she also ruptured her spleen (the MD used the term eviscerated). Its an incredibly serious injury. Suzanne went into emergency surgery around 1 AM. She has now completed surgery and is doing well. Her wife, Angela, is with her at Baptist Hospital in Winston. Their three-year old twin boys are taken care of for the time being. Suzanne will be in the hospital in Winston for 3-4 more days. For those that dont know, Suzanne has been supporting their family while Angela finished grad school. She also recently transitioned from working at an agency to being a self-employed practitioner... that type of change does not come with PTO or sick time, and Suzanne is likely out of commission for 6-8 weeks. We are working together to generate financial support for Suzanne and her family, in order to ease the burden of the medical and non-medical expenses that they will accrue during this stressful time. Though insured - personal insurance and through USAU event insurance, which covers all out-of-pocket expenses after the first $2,500 - there still is a non-trivial burden associated with a large bill leaving the emergency room. (Plus, all of the non-medical costs associated to the injury). The more people involved (and lord knows everyone thinks very highly of Suzanne) the more it would mean to Suzanne, and perhaps more importantly, the more it would mean to her family during this very stressful time. To donate to the Suzanne Fund, please send donations via PayPal to Lily Avery (search Lilyan Avery, lilyavery@gmail, # 352-562-9719), or snail mail a check (107 Plant Rd, Chapel Hill, NC 27514). Emails of support, jokes, stories about how awesome Suzanne is, or anything else spirit-lifting can be sent to boxcar.station@gmail. Any amount you can give will be helpful, so dont hesitate if you think $10 is not enough. $10 is absolutely enough to make a difference. You may also share this request and this story with your team or other ultimate-playing friends.
