Hi, a shout out to my friends who sign up for Amazons new Kindle Unlimited subscription book service. If you dont know about it, you pay $9.99 a month and download as many books as you want from the 600,000 available titles. That number is sure to increase as more authors put their books in the program. I dont have an opinion on whether or not you should join. It will work for some, not others. But if you do join, I want you to know how it affects authors and Id appreciate it if you would share this post to get the word out. Amazon is not stressing this in its new ads. Heres how it works. You search for a book and if it is marked Kindle Unlimited, you download as usual. You are free to read it any time during the period you stay a member. All good. However, the author (me, in this case) wont get paid a royalty until you read at least 10% of the book. Not a big deal you think. Well, when books are free, free in the context of after you pay for your subscription, people tend to binge download. Their eyes are bigger than their eyeballs. They download more than they can read, immediately at least. A book from the KU list that doesnt get read for six months say, wont earn the author a royalty for six months. And if you open it and the phone rings and you have to look up something on the internet and then forget about that book because someone told you about another book and you download that one, well the author will never get paid. Yet you have the book. So please, PLEASE, support your favorite Kindle authors. If you download a book that is free per KU (Kindle Unlimited) please page through it for at least 10% of the book. You will know when you have reached that threshold by looking at the bottom of your screen where it tells you the percentage of the book youve read. You can do this while youre on the phone, the john, waiting for a bus. (BUT NOT WHILE YOURE DRIVING). Then you can go back and read it or not read the rest of it when you want, and the author will have earned their honest wage. Many thanks. Your favorite Kindle author (me). And once again PLEASE SHARE THIS.
